Listen , discuss and read with an open mind.

Monday, 28 January 2013

Listen , discuss and read with an open mind.

The best piece of advice I have ever come across which has been handed over from generation to generation is found in the Rig Veda;

“Let noble thoughts come to us from every side.”

If all who read  this advice thought of it and put it into practice , many wars and much human suffering could be avoided, and the world today would be a much better place to live in.

“Think with an open mind” suggests the psychologist. “Have a board mind”, advises the sociologist, and your will avoid many ulcers; and be happier as well.

And yet, most of us, in one way or other, are narrow minded and prejudiced. Often we shut out the truth and dim the brightest. We avoid any evidence that would refute our belief’s.

It is the mark of a superior mind to open itself to new thinking and logical reasoning.

Listen, discuss and read with an open mind. Search for new ideas. They may come from many, different, and unexpected sources.

Life is made happy by the open-mindedness and deep rooted trust we have in one another .

Lesson Live Has Taught Me

Never accept defeat.

Life has taught me that an individual can achieve anything if he is willing to work hard with dedication.

Life has also taught me that however heavy the odds against an individual or however difficult the circumstances, he should never accept defeat but keep up striving until he achieves what he seeks to obtain in life.

My experience in life has also taught me not to rub people on the wrong side; to avoid arrogance, and draw out the best in men and women by treating them with humaneness and decency and not hurting their emotions or their egos.

That is not a fair test!

At the circus the strong man dipped a sponge into a pail of water and squeezed until every drop of water was out of it. He invited anyone who wished to come into the ring and try to squeeze another drop out of the sponge.

Several men tried it, without any result.

At last a small man entered, and to the astonishment of all present, he squeezed out drop after frop.

A member of the audience recognised the man and shouted. “That is not a fair test!”

That man is a tax collector”

Make a good beginning today

Lives is passing fast. Now is the time to initiate your new plan. Today  is the day to attempt the great and worthy cause which you have been thinking to take up. Delays are dangerous. Postponement weakens purpose. Seize your opportunity which is still within your reach. Put fort your most earnest efforts, and good results will surely follow.

The moments you attempt something great you will find you are on the way to its realisation. All great achievements are a series of progressive steps. All great men have first put fort small of forts, which have led to great results. Let this encourage you to make a vigorous beginning today, so that you dreams and aspirations may become a reality in your life.

Quote from the True charm and Power of Vedanta

The monistic method of realising God is almost the same. The monist also rebels against the slavery of passions and desires. The Vedas say the the soul is bound by three Guans (ropes), Satva, Rajas and Tamas. The monist breaks of  all bondages one after another , till last he realises his freedom. The very first lesson to Arjuna by Sri Krishna runs thus; Go beyond the dualistic conceptions of pleasure and pain , and of ‘I’ and “Thou” Know that you are changeless, infinite and perfect, In this way the monist found that there is nothing to limit him, and then he realise s the infinite nature of his self. To say that he loses himself even as the dew drop merges in the ocean, I sonly by way of helping the understanding. The monistic conception does not destroy the individual . on the contrary the individual who was subject to birth and death, who was weak and ignorant, knows himself to be eternal, infinite and all wise. Here there is no destruction of individuality. The man has been awakened from his false dream that he was finite. This is the Prabuddha or awakened condition, in which one realises that one’s true nature is eternally wise and blissful.

In the dualistic method enjoyment is the ideal. In the monistic method freedom is the ideal. By the first the lover gets his Beloved at last, and by the second the slave becomes the Master. Both  sublime. One has no need to go from one ideal to the other.

But, if He exists?

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

The Vedanta preaches the idea; and the ideal , as we know, is always far ahead of the real, of the practical, as we may call it. There are two tendencies in human nature; one to harmonise the ideal with the life, and the other to elevate the life to the ideal. It is a great thing to understand  this , for the former tendency is the temptation of our lives. I think that I can only do certain class of work. Most of it, perhaps, is bad; most of it perhaps, has a motive power of passion behind it, anger, or greed, or selfishness . Now if any man comes to preach to me a certain ideal, the first step towards which is to give up selfishness , to give up self-enjoyment. I think that is impractical. But when a man brings an ideal which can be reconciled with my selfishness, I am glad at once, and jump at it. That is the ideal for me as the word ‘orthodox’ has been manipulated into various forms so has been the word ‘practical’. My doxy is orthodoxy; your doxy is heterodoxy’. So with practicality , What I think is practical, is to me the only practicality in the world.

INNER ARTIST

Monday, 14 January 2013

INNER ARTIST

There is an artist in your brain His name is IMAGINATION. H e paints pictures that either cheer you or depress you. He paints pictures of what may happen . he deals only with the future, and he has no knowledge of it.

Sometimes he is a pessimist . He paints pictures of danger and death. People sometimes take their own lives because of these frightening pictures.

Sometimes he is an optimist . then he paints pictures of victory peace and happiness.

He may be either your good friend or your bad enemy-this  inner artist of yours.

He may give you confidence, or he may depress you into the depths of despair.

You must control him, If he is a pessimist, you must give him strict orders to paint more helpful pictures.

No man should allow himself to be the victim of a pessimistic imagination.

Man has will power , and he can give orders to his inner artist. He can order the sort of pictures that will give him strength.

To look on the bright side-that is vastly more sensible and helpful than to look at dark disasters that will probably never happen.

From Psychology of Success.

Average man

The average an in the eye of gossiping neighbours is bound to lose, no matter what he does in life. If he is poor, he is a bad manager. If he is prosperous  he made his money through cheating or pure luck. If he is in politics , it is for what he can get out of it. If he is not a politician, he does not know enough to get a government job. If he is not charitable, he is a miser, if he does, it is only for the show , if he is active in his religion , he is hypocrite. If he shows affection , he is a rank sentimentalist , if he keeps his affection to himself , he is cold blooded if he dies young, there was a great future ahead of him If he attains old age, he missed his calling.

Healing By Prayer

The best medicine for all diseases is kritan, japa , and regular meditation  The divine waves regenerate and energise the cells, tissues,  nerves etc, another very cheap but really potent medicine is cheerfulness, Smile, laugh and be cheerful. All dieses will take to their heels.

Even when the medical board has pronounced a case to be absolutely hopeless , prayer comes to the rescue and the patient is surprisingly cured. Healing by prayer is miraculous and mysterious

Lord Dhanwantri, who expounded the Aryurvedic medical science has himself declared. “By the medicine of the repetition of Achyuta, Ananta, Govinda , all diseases are cured. This is my definite and honest declaration. Swami Sivanada

Quote from the True charm and Power of Vedanta

At present , science is busy finding the laws of external nature while religion seeks the truths of the inner world. Naturally they seem to be going in altogether opposite directions . but in comparison with eternity the human race is still in its infancy. Who knows in some distant future , science will reach its ultimate goal, and while comparing its findings with those or religion, it will see that there exist no two separate entities as external and internal worlds. There is but one world-the world of thought . Whose thought is it ? Well, it is not thought even. It is the dream of that great Dreamer who weaves His dream and delights in looking at it.

YOUTH AND EDUCATIION

YOUTH AND EDUCATIION

It would be pertinent to recall the real meaning of ‘Education’ at a time when it has started losing its true meaning these days.

‘Education is a lifelong process. It may begin in schools and college but it does not end there . it is an incessant search for truth, knowledge, wisdom, experience and faith.  A real  student is he who goes  on assimilating knowledge, experience and wisdom throughout his life and goes on building up his life and character”-said Sri RamKrishna.

Teacher cannot give students character from the pages of books. Character building comes from their very lives. Students imbibe more  from teachers’ own lives then they do  from the books or lectures. Thus teachers must have good character.

“Many of the ailments of our present-day educational  systems and many of the maladies affecting students and teachers stem from the narrow educational objective. Viz. examinations and jobs. Of course, examinations can not be easily dispensed with and jobs and careers are essential for every student. But students and teachers should not be under the impression that education is merely a system of passing examination and securing jobs it is much more than that”.-said Swami Vijananada.

As Swami  Vivekanada  rightly said, “Education is a process of life building  man-making , character-building; assimilation of ideas.”

Education should therefore promote values, the spirit of patriotism and service, the will t do hard work, the feeling to uplift the poor and the downtrodden.

Swami Vijnanada’s advice to youth is very relevant here. “Accept not what makes you weak physically and mentally . if any food makes you weak, if any literature spoils your mind, if any company of people  wakens your mind. If any cinema make you weak mentally and physically , reject them as poison.

If you want to be good, it is in your hands, Nobody can make you good by force. Likewise , no body can make you bad against you will. If you are good, the credit goes to you. If you are bad, you yourself fare to be blamed . you are the creator of your destiny . Make your nerves strong . what we want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel. It is man making education all round that we want.

Fundamental rights

Fundamental rights are rights that are very necessary for the growth of on individuals’ personality. They are enjoyed by each citizen irrespective of caste, colour, creed, race or sex.

I meant the play

Miss Skinner starred in a revival of Bearnard Shaw’s Play. “Candida”. He sent her a cable. “ Magnificent! Greatest”. She was very happy and immediately cabled back; “Undeserving such praise “Shaw replied. “I meant the play” Miss Skinner was excited with anger and she retorted . “So did I”

Make a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is nothing but waste of time.

Quotes from the true Charm and power of Vedanta

Before science had sufficiently developed or become aggressive and self-assertive, religion was the mast of the field where science has now entered.  In the early days people in almost every land believed that devils caused diseases and persists cured them. In times of illness men would depend more in supernatural resources than on any earthly thing. But gradually the science of medicine began to develop. Nowadays most men will go to doctors rather than to the church fathers when taken ill. We say ‘most men’ because even now there are found person who believe in the efficacy of sorcery, stoicism, or incantation as a remedy against dieses and illness and physical suffering. There are some pseudo-religions schemes such as mind cure, though-cure,  Christian science, about which it is difficult to say whether they are religions or sciences. At best, they are the relies of the attitude which depended on supernatural remedies rather than on human intelligence and efforts. Of course there are bold and strong g persons even in the field of religion who strongly disapprove of turning spiritual power to secular ends. They will apply spiritual remedy for spiritual purposes, and secular means for achieving secular ends. Why pray to God (and disturb him!) for curing you illness when a simple dose of medicine can cure you ? No doubt these are the boldest and sanest amongst religious person. Many persons will succumb to human weakness when suffering for a long time or faced with a situation beyond the reach of human efforts. But the effect of this attitude on the stability of religion is not very happy. When a person in the twentieth century finds that his forefathers depends on priests for things when he himself can now easily cure, his faith in religion is rudely shaken.
